These are the companies that will drive cultured meat to our plate

26 October 2021

The biggest challenge for the cultured meat companies is the scale-up of the production and reduction of production costs. ttopstart helps these companies in developing smart strategies to achieve their goals. In this blog we discuss which companies will bring cultured meat one step closer to our plate.

Introduction

Cultured meat (also referred to as clean, lab-grown or cell-based) will be able to offer us the best of both worlds: meat which actually tastes like conventional meat but produced with fewer resources and significantly less environmental impact. By now, many people have heard of cultured meat and in Singapore the first cultured meat product, developed by Eat Just and commercialized by their subsidiary GOOD Meat, is approved for market entry. However, today cultured meat is not yet an alternative option for meat in our home-cooked meals.

Disclosed funding

There is no doubt that cultured meat will capture a significant segment of the meat market. Many companies have entered the field, from start-ups to large companies active in the food industry (e.g., Merck, DuPont, Cargill, Bell Food Group, Tyson Foods). The biggest challenge for the cultured meat companies is the scale-up of the production and reduction of production costs. Several companies have raised series B investments to overcome these challenges, to build facilities, and to realize the scale-up of cultured meat. Based on disclosed funding, GOOD Meat, Upside Foods (former Memphis Meats), Aleph Farms and Mosa Meat are frontrunners (see figure). Actor and Oscar winner Leonardo Di Caprio is also investing in the latter two companies, showcasing the increased awareness of cultured meat. We predict that more cultured meat companies will also raise the required investments for scale-up to bring cultured meat one step closer to our plate.
